Thy Rod And Thy Staff They Comfort me!
From the 23rd Psalm

I always wondered how a rod or staff could be comforting
until I got some history.

SHEEP Followers of Jesus are referred to as sheep.   My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: John 10:27  (in RED, said by Jesus)

SHEEPHERDER That name does not fit at all!  Sheep cannot be herded  they have to be led!  It should be sheepleader.

ROD As a person began to prepare for the position of sheepherder, they had to make their own rod.  One that was the right weight, and size.

A Rod was never used for correction, it was never used on the sheep.  It was used as protection against the wild beasts that tried to invade the flock.

STAFF It was long and had a crook at the end.  It was used for assistance.   If one of the precious sheep got caught in the brambles, a ditch or any of the other places we could think of.  The Shepherd would use the crook at the end to help his sheep get out.

There is a lead sheep in every flock one that the shepherd can direct
then the rest will follow.
