Balanced??
Through the eyes of Janie:

But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:  But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.  Luke 10:40-42

In several different places it says Jesus loved Martha.  Martha wanted to fix a special dinner for Jesus.  Martha was more concerned about the dinner than about the guest.  Martha could have said lets have sandwiches and enjoyed the company.

Mary knew the secret of balance, do what needs done, then set at the feet of  Jesus.  It appears that Mary helped fix the meal, Martha was only complaining about serving.  Martha wanted everything to be perfect. Jesus was not saying Mary should not work, just not at that moment.

For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.  2 Thessalonians 3:10

We can tell Martha was not used to doing all the work or she would not expect help.  But Jesus said don't worry so much about stuff, come and enjoy the company, I'm not going to be here long.  Some times we need to stop worrying about if it's done right and just enjoy the moment. There's a saying, "housework done poorly still blesses the home."  It doesn't have to be done perfectly.

And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.  Luke 6:31

  • If we would like people to call us, call someone else.
  • If we would like someone to turn off the tv if we go visit, turn off the tv if someone comes.
  • If we want someone to be nice to us be nice to them.
  • If we want people to be interested in what we say, be interested in what they say.
  • We get what we give.

Are we balanced or do we go overboard?  One way to gauge is do we ignore others while doing what we feel needs doing, like Martha did?
